AmeriCorps, sponsored by the University of Maryland Center on Aging, and hosted locally by the Area Agency on Aging, provides opportunities for seniors 50 and older to make a lasting impact in their communities. Members serve as Community Service Specialists to help support and sustain independent living services in community respite and family caregiver programs. AmeriCorps members may be eligible to receive monthly financial incentives and also earn educational awards from the National Service Trust that can be used at a college or university for adult and continuing education programs or degree programs.
The Legacy Corps Multigenerational Respite Program, funded by a grant from the University of Maryland Center on Aging, pairs low income seniors and younger volunteers to provide quality in-home respite and support services to at risk, low-income frail elders and their caregivers. Volunteers further develop resources to help to empower and support family caregivers leading to improved quality of life. Volunteers are eligible to receive monthly incentives. Both programs are bi-lingual, serving Spanish and English speaking volunteers. |
